hi i am in desperate need of advice on my car, as I am getting no joy with the garage i have a late 2003 passat 1.9tdi 130bhp, and its been in the garage for 2 weeks now, it was originally put in as i was getting pools of water behind the driver seat only in the footwell, the seats etc and door were dry? and no obvious water anywhere else in car.

it was put into local vw garage where i bought car, monday morn 8am, they then called at 12noon to say that a guy had fixed the car and that it was the door seal that had went so they replaced it and charged me a fortune, and said they had carried out water test and everything was ok, so i picked up car to find it still soaked they said they had no means to take out water so i took it to valet company who dried and washed out capet, only to have it there all day and when i picked it up she ran it through the carwash and then the car filled with water again grrrr.

i drove it straight back to garage and blew my top, they then took it backand kept it for week. then on the thursday i got phonecall to say that they had found another leak?? yeh u heard me... it was a gromit under the battery blocked!!, so they then put it back to valet company to suck out the water, then i got phonecall from valet company direct on friday to say it was taking in water again, now the valet company woman says its a wee pipe under drivers seat that is bringin water in, next to vent thing. so i called garage for them to collect the car again and sort it.

monday morn nothing from then, wednesday nothing they say car is in garage, and carpets are drying out, have they done water test , hell yeh the poured hose over it,?? i ask that they drive it into car wash to detect water... now we are at friday, and garage has phoned to say wait for it,,,,,,,, car is ready,,,,,,,,,BUT alternator light has came on and needs replacing,,,, i asked if it was water that got to it or anything that may have affected another part water wise, they say no. I asked to see old alternator they say its going back to vw to be refurbished and that i would need to pay surcharge of £140 if i want it back to inspect it.

so wot do i do now, any ideas, i need help please, and i apologise for my lack of knowledge of widgets and parts but i am limited in my knowledge being a gal.

i need help........... my car is in great nick but i still dont have a difinitive answer to this leak and i hope to god that i dont collect my car next week to find it leaking again, as i swear it wont be pretty in that showroom when i go back with my car.

ta again

ave tryed the door seals??

they said it was the door seals the first time so they replaced them, its a case of randomly thinking its something and fixing it without actually finding the fault.

well should they not have checked that when they replaced seals though, i swear to god if it leaks in water, i am gonna go mental, i have also asked for valuation of car as i may just get rid of it, although i do love me car its starting to become a costly wee beastie.

Hello, just seen this thread. Have they checked the drain holes under the battery? Your problem sounds very familiar.

There are countless threads on here where these block and cause water to enter the car through the pollen filter/vent intake, into the vents and the water ends up in the rear passenger foot well.

Just do a search for foot well and water.

Also if the seal between the pollen filter and car body is broken (as it was with mine), water will leak through and come down the fire wall behind the glove box as well as into the ventilation system. This gets onto the wiring loom on the left hand side behind the trim, runs onto the connectors and the collects under the carpet in the foot well where the convenience control unit is. This causes havoc with the electrics I discovered I had this leak when my alarm started going off at random. There can be quite a lot of water there with out any obvious sings of a leak. Again lots of threads here about alarm/central locking problems caused by this.

So when you next see you car check a couple of things. Is there evidence of water collecting in the plenum chamber where the battery is, is the pollen filter wet? Take it out, is there any sign of water in the pollen filter housing ? Then get your hand up behind the glove box on the left hand side, does the carpet and foam on the fire wall feel damp ?

I hope your luck improves with that garage.

Do a search for Passat leak, its the plenum chamber filling with water due to the drain grommet being blocked (which the dealer has now done, but check it). Water gets into the electrics under the floor, theres some good pictorial guides on how to cure this and repair the wiring. I would wet it and take it back to the dealer when the alternator goes faulty again, its almost certainly a wiring problem, Id say.

Hey man. i have the same problem with my Vw Golf Cabriolet.... i do actually think its the door on mine but the other place it might be with yours cos i know a guy that works with me has a passat and has the same problem is around the battery under the bonnet...

check if there is water build up around it. Apparently VW know about this problem and they service it or something....

Some holes get blocked up in this area because of pollen filters getting blocked and the water backs up through some holes...

hope this helps..

how much did it cost to get the seals done? cos i think its the seals on my car..

well I have had time to mull this over and I am definitely going to take it further, as i aint no mechanic or anything else but the alternator def seems as its connected to the leak when they say it aint. I am more dissapointed than anything else with the service:(, they may have given me a courtesy car but that was after my face kind of told them how unhappy I was, I was just speechless to pick that car up again to find it leaking. The garage in question is Specialist Cars VW Aberdeen. Its kind of sickening as I have recommended this garage to friends in the past who have actually bought brand new cars from them and received poor service...

We shall see what happens next week when they phone and tell me to come and collect my car, maybe I need to write to volkswagen if thats an option? who knows, any ideas would be appreciated.

ta again, ;) I may have to watch my back just incase a blacked out transporter van nabs me off the street, kidnapps me and gags me for mentioning their name :D

Hi mate. There is indeed a drain hole under the battery tray which has a rubber gromet that gets blocked up and causes water to enter the cabin. What gets forgotten, though, is there is another drain hole under the brake servo that needs clearing. http://www.weirdlittlebiscuit.com/passat/leak/ HTH

thats correct I found that out the hard way, after removing the battery cleaning the drain plug then putting everything back together I was still getting water , cleaning the grommet under the servo solved it
