Why wont my door open from inside???

Hi all, my '91 5-door GTi drivers side front door wont open easily from inside - you have to fiddle with the door knob for a while & at the same time pull the door release lever until it catches. Before I get a replacement door lock/catch, can the existing one be fixed if I take it out?
