Polo making strange noise........

When I go downhill, recently I've noticed a couple of times that it sounds like the engine goes to a higher pitch, sounding almost like I'm in the wrong gear, though I'm not....I feel something bad is impending..

Anyone experienced this?

This was obviously the gearbox! C'mon where are all you experts???

You might have have more response if you had put some details about model year, engine size, etc.;)
