Hi all, i hope the following helps some people:

I recently bought a VAG-COM interface from ebay - the blue one, with USB, KKL 409.1. It comes with a driver CD and shareware version of Ross Tech VAG-COM.

The issue i had was that, when connected, my computer and the software would 'see' the interface on the port "COM4" but when scanning it would time-out after 4 attempts and then say "interface not found".

The reason I found was this:
The driver software supplied emulates a serial port through the USB. This means that Windows effectively still treats the port as a USB connection (plug'n'play) and automatically assigns its port numbers when installing the driver. This is what caused my problem as the COM port in the VAG-COM software has to match the COM port assigned to that device on the computer.

To set these as the same, do the following. (the interface needs to be plugged into your pc, but not necessarily your car)
1. make a note of the port number that seems to find the interface in the VAG-COM software
2. close the program and right-click on the my computer icon, then select "manage"
3. from system tools, select "device manager" and then expand "ports"
4. it should be clear which port is for your interface by the description
5. right-click the icon and choose properties, followed by the port settings tab.
6. click the advanced button and change the port number to the same as the one you noted from the software earlier.
7. click ok on all the windows and close the device manager.
8. restart the VAG-COM software and try to connect to your car again.

this worked for me, after hours of fiddling with other settings, and i've seen a few other posts from people having similar issues. can't guarantee it will work, but its gotta be worth a shot. ;)

I also found it worthwhile rebooting the computer.

I think that will help a few people, good write up.

This might help also.
I currently bought a cable off ebay which did not come with drivers, but i found the drivers on this site work a treat.
