I have a 96 1.9tdi a4 which had the gearbox replaced in it before i bought it. This lasted up until one month ago when driving home from work i could not get any gear while driving. I found the problem to be worn brakes within the gearbox preventing the gears slowing down when changing gear. I'm still waiting on parts to come for it. Has anyone ever had such a problem.

I had a similar problem in which it was hard to select a gear but this time while stationary or moving slowly. Somedays it was fine others not. Initial advice suggested a new clutch & flywheel. However, my local garage first changed the gear box oil which worked a treat. They said the oil can get "gloopy". Anyway, after about another 6 months I needed a new clutch anyway. According to my Hayes manual, the gearchange linkage is also something to check. Maybe this is the brakes (do you mean bushes?) your waiting for?

Hi, i think he is talking about Automatic Gearbox and they have a torque converter(no clutch/flywheel). Yes the gearbox clutches do wear out with age and cost big bucks to overhaul. Sometimes its a easy fix as a valve body or a fresh fluid change. You should take it to a garage and have it scaned for trouble codes and they should be able to diagnose if the fault its mechanic/hydraulic or electric. Testing is done with the gearbox in situ. The automatic gearbox selector its done by cable and you should not adjust it unless knowing what you do ! Take the car to a automatic gearbox specialist and have them flush the oil properly as bits of friction lining off the worn clutches will contaminate the fresh oil leading to early failure of the g'box oil filter!
