'98 Golf. I can't actually remember if the heater controls are supposed to light up! I have tried to remove some panel bits looking for a light source but haven't found anything usefull. Am I wasting my time?

Yes they should light up, but no idea where the bulbs are!

the bulb is behind the middle dial (0, 1, 2, 3, 4).. get a cloth and some pliars, wrap the cloth around the dial to stop it scratching and then use the pliars to pull it straight out. you will then reveal the bulb behind. its a tiny thing.. you need some pincer pliars to coax it out. be gentle, if you crush the bulb while its still stuck in there, youll never get it out. you will need to tease it out though.
you can get a replacement from halfords for like 2 quid. if that. the difference is amazing once they light up again :P
