Removing plastic trim on sill of the door

How is the plastic trim on the sill of the door removed. I have seen posts saying you just insert a large flat head screwdriver and prise the trim off. What I was wondering was - Does the trim come off straight up towards the roof of the car or are the clips sideways ie you need to pull the trim off towards the centre of the car.

Also is it safe to spray WD40 on the wiring loom connectors to displace any fluid that has got in there - or is just best to just use a hair dryer to dry the loom and connectors.
