Excessive oil consumption

Hi,
I have a 2001 Golf 1.8T estate that has done 82000 miles.
Oil consumption has been negligible between services until last September when it is now consuming about 1 litre per 1000 miles.
I guess I want some idea if this is normal, might it stabilise at that or is it likely on a steep roll downhill?

That says to me the turbo is on the way out, that level of consumption will also damage both lambda sensors and the catalyst.
