Hi, can anyone give me any idea why my power steering becomes really, really heavy when the revs drop to idle? It's so heavy, it's like the power steering pump has failed.

Thanks
Rob

A weak pump or a slipping belt, is there any noise when the weight increases?

there is no noise at all. Is there a pressure switch that could be faulty maybe?

What year and engine code is it?

It's a 1996 model, sorry, I don't understand what you mean by "engine code" It's a 2.6 if that's any help.

It may say the engine code in the spare wheel bay. I would imagine it is 3 letters in length.

It will be an ABC engine. The pump is a common failure on these as they get very hot due to their location in the “V” of the engine. The pump is Audi part number 8D0 145 156 X and costs £219.13 inc. VAT from Audi but can be bought elsewhere but be vary wary of the quality. An exchange unit from ZF would be quite acceptable.

Thanks very much gents. All help very much appreciated. I found a pump from German and Swedish Car parts for £125. I might give them a go, they seem to have a good name.

Thanks again.

Oh Like that is it?! I've just put an order in for that part and I'm picking it up this afternoon. I hope it's the right one.

I had the car checked at an Audi specialist and they also told me the same as you, "weak pump"

Thanks for your help on this one. I'll no doubt be back on sooner or later, the car is pushing 180,000 miles now. :o
