I am having a bit of an awful time with my 1.4 X registration Polo, I was lead to believe these are highly reliable cars, but I beg to differ. Firstly the exhaust had to be changed within about a month of me having it, and the car has always been alarmingly noisy when driving it, even though it sounds fine when the car is stationary; it almost sounds like there is something wrong at the front of the car but not like an engine problem. But lately my little car has been causing a bit of mystery, all of a sudden one day my central locking just went, then a while later I was in work and I got a call saying my car electric windows were going up and down of there own accord even though the car is locked and off. I tried taking out the electric fuse but it was still happening, I have now taken it back to the garage THREE times and it just seems to be fixed for a while but then goes back to the same! The mechanics have tried lubing and changing the hydraulic mechanism in the door but its still not working. Yesterday they came down in the middle of the night and my whole interior is soaked right through and ruined. HELP PLEASE!!!!

The window problem is probably down to a faulty door lock micro switch and they cost £14.79. The windows can be opened or closed using the door key for total closure/opening so I suspect the problem lies in this area. Does the driver’s door key operation feel smooth? Compare it to the other side. The operation of these switches can be observed by using a diagnostic computer. Are you taking the car to a garage that works on any car or a VW specialist? The door locks are pneumatic in operation or in other words, they are operated by air pressure/vacuum. Unfortunately the Polo 6N2 (as your car is known) is very prone to gearbox problems and that is probably the noise. The 6N2 is a very reliable car but not as good as the previous 6N but still better than many other makes of small car.
