i have a 98 a4 1.8 it has an intermitent starting fault it struggles to start then splutters for a short while before stalling then after struggling to start again it seems to run ok.:1zhelp:

has anyone any suggestions of what is causing this

Without seeing it, hearing it or reading fault codes its very difficult to diagnose like this. It could be anything electrical or mechanical. FWIW I had a similar problem on my 2.0 Audi 80 years ago and it was the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. The ECT failed in a way that the engine thought it was warm when it was really cold, so gave insufficient fuel when starting.

Similar problem on my 1998 2.8 Avant last year. ECU temp. sensor and fuel pump relay replaced. OK since then.
