Hi

I have a golf 1.6 2000 was hoping someone could help me solving this problem, every now and again I get this message on my dashboard "alternator workshop" does anybody now what it means.

Never seen or heard of that message. But I would guess it has to do with the output from the alternator. You could check the output voltage yourself with meter. With the engine running put a voltmeter across the battery terminals you should get between 13 & 14volts.
Also check that the belt isn't loose.

Hi

Thanks for the reply i done that check this morning, when the engine is idling (900rpm) it sits at 12.5 and when the engine is reving (1500rpm) its 14.
I checked the belt and looks fine, not lose at all.
Anymore ideas ???

Has your battery got a built in hydrometer? (the little clear plastic eye should be green).
Are all the battery connections clean and tight? Also check the harness from the alternator back via the starter to the battery.
Have you noticed when the message appears? i.e. on start up first thing, or whilist driving. Is there any pattern to it?
I'm sure it's got something to do with the charging/battery side.
