Hi Guys

I run an a3 1.8T at the minute but im thinking that in a few months i may need to get a diesel to help save towards a new house.

I really want a hatchback again and with any luck i should have about 5500 to spend, so my question is which tdi to buy!??

I just want to know peoples opinions/experiences with the different models like ibizas, golfs etc....

I really like the GT TDi's

The one to get though would be either the 1.9 130bhp or 1.9 150bhp.

The problem with that is that parkers say that the 130bhp was available from 2001 on a Y reg at £5905 from private in good condition.

Had a look on Autotrader and you can get a 2002 150bhp but with 100k.

Even the 130's have got between 80-100k on them for £5500.

2002-2003 A3's are around the same mileage and price as the golf.

2003-2004 Leon's with 70-100k for that price

Dont buy a diesel to save for a house gadge.

1) you wont save that money from cheaper fuel anyway, you ll spend it elsewhere
2) you can live in your car if needs be.

I wouldnt be getting rid of a 1.8T

Although if you had to go for a diesel, the GT TDi's are supposed to be quite good..

What you want is a mk5 2.0 GT TDI golf (170bhp) that would be your best bet

for what it's worth, get a P1 leon tdi, you could pick up a nice SE (forget the cupra's, they'll be dogs at your price range) tdi, which go up to 130bhp iirc.

the leon has slightly superior handling and ride to the golf and with the lighter body, you'll feel the power a touch more.

added to this, parts are very slightly cheaper and of course, with the Seat badge, you're sure to pick up a bargain.

I would say a nice Reflex Silver or Black GT TDI

If you want your power a little earlier I would say the 130PS model as it has a smaller turbo.

Coming from a petrol 1.8T you may be used to driving at high revs so a 150PS may be suitable.

The torque figurs between the 130 and 150 aren't far off.

Obviously there will be a disproportionate premium on the 150. You can always have either of the cars remapped for around £250+

The VAG derv engines are known to go on so don't be too surprised at anything over 100k miles. You will be hard pushed to find any under 75k.

Remember your budget is at the lower end of the price range so high miler is what you might be limited to.

Additional Spec wise, I think all come with A/C but some will have climate control. Some may have Cruise control but if not you can get it retro fitted. I think most have 6 disc changer (in boot or dash)
