View Full Version : Difference between TDi Specs

Hi there,

New here and have nearly been converted from Vauxhall. Done the easy bit and sold the Astra now doing the hard bit and parting with some cash on the right Golf, however a little advice is needed.

I am (I think) wanting to buy a 2006 facelift GT TDI 140, however when looking around I have come across many GT TDI Sport 140, which seems to have smaller alloys as standard (16" I believe). The GT TDI 140's I have looked at are all speced to the same level and have the same alloys (which I think are 17"). My question is; is there any other noticeable differences between specs of the two different models? Or have I got it completely wrong?!

Can someone offer any help on this as the other big difference I can see is insurance. The TDI Sport seems to be Grp 7 (however this may be a 105 version) and the GT TDI is Grp 13.

Any advice appreciated, although go easy - its my first post!

Thanks

Ben

welcome

Mk5 gt tdi's have 16" alloys and lower suspension as standard.

if it is not a gt, it will have 15" wheels and higher suspension.

this is as i understand it.

your sentence on insurance is correct.

also, gt's don't have cruise as standard, none gt's do have cruise.

this is also as i understand it.

Hi there,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Take a look at this: http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLKSWAGEN+GOLF/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-143-4294966995-4294967159/advert.action?R=200751300775675&distance=229&postcode=CO4+9HB&channel=CARS&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=GOLF&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

advertised as a GT TDi 140, however I would class this as a sport.

Compare it to this: http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLKSWAGEN+GOLF/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-143-4294966995-4294967159/advert.action?R=200738295233605&distance=106&postcode=CO4+9HB&channel=CARS&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=GOLF&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

Which I would think is a GT TDI 140. They have the different wheels, however how can this possibly make it 6 insurance groups higher - surely there has to be more to it than that. Or am I just not seeing something?!

They are esentially the same car (engine) mkv gttdi 140bhp. The sport you refer to is 1.9tdi (105bhp) insurance group 6.

I was after a GT TDI, and unknowingly picked up a 2.0 TDI Sport - Exact same spec as GT but has 17" wheels with 225/45 tyres and even lower suspension. Ins grp 13 too.

Can do you a nice remap on the 105, should take it up to about 150hp.

Thanks, Mark

Cheers, It's a 140, and I'm already sold on the idea of taking it up to around 175bhp (give it the power to match its handling), but Norwich Union won't cover it, so I have to wait until November to change insurers to someone who will!

This is the one I just bought:
http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLKSWAGEN+GOLF/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-24-51-88-192-4294966995-4294967159/advert.action?R=200737294463445&distance=8&postcode=KT9+1JG&channel=CARS&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=GOLF&min_pr=9000&max_pr=10000&max_mileage=

On the V5 it stated 2.0 GT Tdi, but is it then a Sport? I'm a little confused?!

That's the one VW UK conned/sold to us all as a GT TDI as stated on the V5, this was before the one with the factory applied GT badges.

Look in the boot under the carpet to the left for the data sticker and it should say something like sportline.

Hope this helps

I'll check that, thanks. Was mine a sort of "trial" version to see how it sells?! And then they got the 'GT' badges out! Hmm, do the badges just clip into place?

That's a straight GT TDI - The sport has 17" alloys with 225/45 tyres. The pic above is the GT Sport - only been out about 6 months. Before that you either had a GT or a Sport.

Hi guys, new here but i just bouught a 54 gt tdi 140 same as the blue one in the autotrader link above but black. Its exactly the same except black with more sportier seats too. Mines according to v5 and also sheet in boot and manual is classed as GT TDI SPORT. It just doesnt have the front end of the new GT ones!

Mac, I have just done the same. The GT line wasnt released in 2004, it was just called the TDi Sport. I was a bit disappointed too, like yourself!

if in doubt, and you can see the reg number in the picture, run through an insurance quote online and that should bring up the correct spec of car as online quotes that have a reg number provided do it for you.
