Hi, could be a fault with the hazzard warning switch on the dash, they are linked. Good luck.

I agree, they can become temperamental, mine did, thats more than likely the cause of your problem. The next time they don't work, remove the switch from the dash and tap it with a screw driver and i bet they'll work again. You can pick them up for anywhere between £5-£20 on ebay or a good vw place.
