Hi all, just got an 05 Golf GTI and love it. Have had a few GTi's over the years and this is by far the best. Only problem i have is that its a bit noisy (rumbles) at 30 / 40 mph. No humming noise at any speed. Wondering if this is a wheel bearing or tyre (all tyres look ok though) or just how the Mk5 GTI's drive/sound with the exhaust and stiffer suspension? Want to get it sorted as its warrranty runs out in Feb !!!
Also does anyone know if dealers will have the car in to check for any faults FOC before the warranty expires...or is this wishful thinking. Cheers

All Mk5's suffer from quite alot of road (tyre) noise. It has taken me a while to get used to.

Also your dealer may well take it in to check, but if the warranty is with them, they're not likely to find anything are they! Get it checked independently with written report, and then take it to your dealer and ask them to fix under warranty!

Hi - yeah its just road noise according to VW.
Just out of interest local VW dealers have just had my car in for a free end of warranty inspection. - Found a CV gaiter split & replaced it under warranty :-)

Not got a Mk5 GTI,but have got a MK5 GT TDI. Car is a 55 plate and both rear wheel bearings have been replaced under warranty with the car currently just over 50,000 miles.

Take the car to the dealer and have them look at it. Just tell them that there is a problem and let them look at it. This is what I do and so far everything I have thought may be a problem actually turns out to be problem. What's the point in having a warranty if you are afraid to use it. They shouldn't charge you to look at the car, especially if you feel there is a problem - well not in my experience anyway.

Hi, I have a 54 plate 2.0 FSI with what I suspect as a bearing noise. The car has been to my dealership twice (the 2nd time for 2 days) but they said that there was nothing wrong with it. The noise, a classic bearing hum, starts when you go 40 and above. I plan to change the bearings myself when the weather gets warmer.

I just replaced the bearing on my 04 GT TDI this weekend. You cannot just get a bearing, you have to get the whole hub. £75 + VAT from VW.
1 1/2 hours from start to finish. Mine was bad and the noise was really loud. Replacing the whole hub means you do not have to remove the strut though. A big time saver.
However i did damage the wire connector for the brake pad wear. This was a hassle to fix so be careful when snapping them of.

Thanks for your reply. I forgot to mention my noise is coming from the rear, so pad indicator wiring shouldn't be an issue. The bearings on the rear are also part of a hub assembly and cost about £105 inc VAT. You didn't say if your noise had gone so please get back.

i couldn't agree more, i've never had an issue with getting a car inspected before the warranty expires. I'm that impressed with the service, i may extend my extended warranty

Yes the noise is gone. The old one was completely shot. From inside the car it was difficult to determine if it was the left or right side. I jacked the car up (using a trolley jack of course), started and put in 3rd gear. After doing both sides it was very apparent which side had the problem.

Your airborne wheel was running at twice the normal speed. Other differentials are available.

I'll wager it's the standard Golf & Passat saw tooth tyre problem. I had it at only 15k on my GTI. Nothing visible on the rear tyres and I was advised (by an VW specialist who inspected it) to change the front discs and pads. I did, no change.

To diagnose it, swap front and rear tyres over. The noise won't go away but if it changes then that's your diagnosis. If th noise remains EXACTLy the same then it points to something else.

Put the fronts back where they came from and buy two new rears. Or else put up with it until it gets worse and drives you mad.

I had the same problem with my 2007 GT TDI. All off a sudden it started to make a droning noise when you go over 45mph and the eased off a little when you got to 70mph. I took it to a VW specialist and they checked all the wheel bearings and said they are fine. He said the rear tyres looked a little worn, perished and look a little miss shaped. So I ordered two new tyres from asdatyres.com and had them fitted today. Only £50 a tyre for 225/45/17. There is still a fair amount of road noise but the droning noise has stopped.
