Hi, I have a 1999 A6 2.5TDI SE Avant auto and it has started intermittently spewing out clouds of blue smoke through the exhaust (I think) on braking. It has done 87000 miles and has never needed any extra topups of oil between services. Is this a problem with the servo? I recently had the timing belts replaced as in the service schedule - could this be anything to do with the problem? Thanks.

Hello,

I have had the same problem with my 98 2.5tdi se, Heres how i fixed it !

Under all the injector pipes behind the Pump ont he top on the Engine block is a Crankcase breather filter, its about £14 from audi for the part and a Bi**h to fit as you have to remover all the injector pipes and get it arround the turbo oil pipe, i dread to think how much Audi would charge to change this, but it sorted the problem on my :D

Hi, the CCV filter can be replaced without removing the injectors pipes but you may need some verry long torx bits, but its easier to work with the injector pipes removed. Remember to mark the pipes with dots to aid refitting. They go in in the order you took them off: cyl 1,2,3,4,5,6 and cyl 6,5,4,3,2,1.Tighten each union nut as you put them back on as you will find that they wont be accesible when you put the others back !. The EGR valve needs removing also. To check if its the CCV filter, remove the oil cap. If its hissing, then you found the culprit. If it does not then your turbo seals are shot(exhaust side) and i advise you stop driving the car as you will damage the catalyst. Also the ccv costs 41 pounds from AUDI now :-(.

My sincere thanks to both Cubleymatt and Adamss24 for the information offered, you were spot on. I unscrewed the oil filler and was greeted with a loud hiss but it's all sorted now, thanks to your info. Sorry for the delay, I've been up to my eyes in other matters of late. Also my thanks to Stuart as, without the VWAudi forum, this information would have been unavailable to me. Thanks a million to you all and I hope that I can be of help to other members in the future.

Hi there. my 2.5 tdi has done about 225k miles and is still going very strong. However, I have had the CCV filters replaced 3 times (about every 8 months) :zx11: , and am planning a DIY session this time (with the help of a mechanic). adamss24 mentioned the "The EGR valve needs removing"; what's this one and where is it:confused: ? Thanks.

EGR valve(Exhaust Recirculating valve ) is the silver round thing in the midle of the engine, next to the turbocharger's actuator. It has a small diameter black hose on the side of it !There are 2 allen bolts holding it on the inlet manifold and another 2 nuts holding it on the exhaust manifold, under the turbocharger. Keep the gaskets and be carefull not to drop the bolts-one of these magnetic pick-up tools will help a lot if you drop something ! There is a picture of it in one off the other threads on the forum, but i cannot find it now to be able to put a link to it !

If you have access to a user with VAG-COM, you can stop the EGR from actuating - (and no one will know). If you disconnect the selenoid plug it will raise a fault code.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies and help. The filter has been replaced and the car is fine. :beerchug:

I have some good news for those with a 1998-2001 A6 2.5tdi. A specialist told me that the CCV filter from the later model will fit - and it does! The benefit being that the later filter is a plastic chamber with three nozzels at the bottom - and hence should not get blocked (the specialist has not had any in for replacement). The standard filter is simply a meterial gauze that blocks.

The later filter is a bit of a tight squeeze to lower it into the housing, but it just takes some small fingers and manouvering....

Part numbers:

Standard AFB engine code filter : 059103464 (called set of seals) £48.11

Later filter : 059103464B (called set of seals) £44.57 - and it's cheaper!

Please check and make sure that the engine codes etc are correct and that the filter will fit in your car - The information above is my personal experience and for reference only. Ask the dealer to show you both and make your mind up on which you wish to use.

Hi, another infrequent post from me.

My 2000 A4 2.5 V6 Tdi is doing exactly the same.

Has anybody on here got photos of the CCV filter's location, I'm fairly handy with the spanners and don't mind attempting the job, just need pointed in the right direction.:D

Recently bought a 99 A6 2.5 TDi after doing a service it started kicking out white smoke at traffic lights etc (oil level correct). Checked the oil filler cap and had the high pressure hiss mentioned above. To confirm it was the CCV I put a breathable vent over the filler and as expected the problem went away. So today I removed the the CCV and cleaned it out with white spirit a the white smoke has gone. So a big thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, as I was seriously beginning to think my turbo was on its way out. As a precaution I've also ordered the later CCV from Audi just in case the problem returns.:beerchug:
