I had a similar problem (A200 turbo) when my ignition coil was (incompletely) failing. The failure was heat sensitive and I fixed it temporarily with a heat shield around the coil, but that lasted only a short time before the failure was permanent, kicking me for a new coil.

Check the fuel pump and tank strainer, also filter.

Could also be the hall sender in the distributor. Wait until it next cuts out and test the hall sender is pulsing?

This scan show how to do this:

http://www.vw-club.ru/service/manuals/A2_1/1081-05c.pdf

applies to VW 16v but I think the method will be the same. Please be aware that the wires to the hall sender (inside the distributor) are very fine and can become brittle. interfering with the wiring plug/socket can cause problems with this part if you are not careful.
If it is faulty, probe distributors may be able to help?
