Hi,

I recently purchased a Mk3 1994 Auto 1.8 and was wondering if I could ask a few questions.

Firstly the front passenger electric window doesn't work. The lights dip when I press the button and a click sound is heard but otherwise it's dead. I can purchase a second hand motor for £45 delivered but can I fit it myself and what tools would I need?

Secondly, the lock on the same door has come loose. It just swivels inside the barrel and slides out with the key inside. I suspect the bolt has fallen of the back.

My question on this is, will I be able to see the back of the lock when I remove the door panel to replace the window motor?

Many thanks and hope you all have a good year!

Jack

dont be hasty with that motor does your window work with both swicthes ie double switch on driverside which opperates both windows or is it just passanger side switch not wishing to sound condacending?????
as does your drivers side have dual switch for both front windows????
just had to ask

you should have a spring and clip locking rod on end of barrel this has probaly dropped off if you can pull out whole barrel also if it has slid out have you removed the key when its out as you may have to have barrel re-tumbled as it will not match your key if you remove your door trim you may find inside the missing bits of your door lock rattling around at the bottom
hope this helps!!!!

The motor is jammed and they are fiddly to replace, especially if you want to change the motor from one mechanism to another. If the mechanism cabling unravels it is a sketch the re-wind it. Occasionally they can be freed off by holding the switch in the down position and slamming the door. Also check the wires from the door to the body to see if any are broken but the voltage dip suggests a heavy current draw by the motor indicating it is jammed.

With the door lock, the paddle will have broken. To repair this you need a lock rebuild set which any VW dealer parts person will be able to provide. This is quite easy to fit except that you will be given an empty lock barrel and you will have to transfer the tumblers and their tiny little springs over to the new barrel in the exact correct order. I did one yesterday and it takes about ten minutes. Getting the handle off and back on can be fun if you have never done one. Firstly remove the screw inside the door shut. Then turn the key to a 45 degree angle and push the handle towards the front of the car, the pull the handle away. Refitting is the reverse of removal.

Thanks guys for your quick response!

This all sounds a bit too much for me, given the fact that I don't have much experience, the tools and even a decent place to work. The problem is I can't afford being ripped off right now, after Christmas and all that. Any idea how much this should cost me?

Many thanks,

Jack

Very difficult to say, you could need a wire repair, a motor, a mechanism or all three. Anyway, why would you get ripped off? Do you mean that paying for a simple job that takes a long time feels like being ripped off? Can’t you find a VW specialist that you can trust?

Thanks crasher, I think I found someone I can trust and they are nearby too, so I'm dropping the car off there this evening and will get it back tomorrow.

I can let you know how much it does cost me if you want!

Many thanks,

Jack
