View Full Version : How long to warm up? AFN 110 1997

Ive got a 1997 A4 TDI 110 with the AFN engine. When i first got the car i had to replace the thermostat due to it never getting warmer than 70 degrees.....

The car now reaches 90 degrees and stays there once there however i still think it should warm up quicker than it does?

It takes about 4 to 5 miles before 90 degrees is reached.... is this normal?

If driven round town it seems even worse

Thanks

Rob

Hi I would say that is fairly normal,a lot depends, on the outside temperature, and of course how you drive the car.

I have the same engine which behaves the same way. In can take a long time to reach max temp, especially in cold weather and with the heater full on.

Ah ok thanks, someone did say to me that these engines are very thermally efficient and dont generate much heat.

I just needed to compare it to similar cars having only owned petrol cars before.

thanks again

sounds normal ! :o diesels take longer to reach optimal operating temp. as was said ..more thermal efficient :D thats the whole story !
good luck :beerchug:

Good - search works :-)

This thread answers my questions - was thinking my thermostat was U/S but it all sounds normal.

Cheers

Yep, I have treated engine with ZX1 friction reducer - hate the thought of running cold that long - esp as I'm on an expressway in about 2 minutes & sitting at 60mph ...

Very sympathetic to mechanical wear...

My 1.8 ADR (petrol) takes 7 miles to even reach 80C, whilst it's 4C outside. So yeah, even petrol's will take a while to reach optimal temp in this sort of weather :(

Hi all, my car has a new stat and takes about 18 miles of m'way and town driving to get nearly warm. Is my car making fun of me? It heated up wuicker with the old stat but never reached 85 - 90 degrees.

Did you check the coolant heater plugs?

Coolant heater plugs...?

At the back of the head there's a housing with a pipe coming out of it. There's 3 coolant heater plugs in the housing. I know coolant heating is an oxymoron but the wife says I'm an uttermoron ....

So there is! I've just gone round to GSF to pick up a new trio. Whether they're working or not I can't imagine they're at their best after all these years. Thanks for the tip! I'll check the feed to them too whilst I'm there. Failing this, maybe I have a duff stat.

After this mornings journey to placement I can report that... f'all difference!!

I'm going to try a different thermostat again though. I can't get my head round why, the old one would rarely let the engine hit 90 degrees yet warmed up very quickly however the new one, on warmer days will hit 90 but take an age to reach there...

I know this is an old thread, but after 6 yrs I became convinced that warm up time should be a lot faster, so I've just replaced the thermostat. The difference has been amazing, with 90 deg being reached must faster, even with heater on. I wish I'd done this years ago. The original T/stat looked OK, but it must have been opening at too low a temp. I was a bit puzzled by the replacement Circoli T/Stat from Eurocarparts (only £4 odd) because the integral seal was quite different from the Audi original with a separate "O" ring. Also, the Circoli part was labled as "Volvo". However, seems to fit OK.
