Hello,

I am about to buy an A4 Avant (B7 platform) with standard fit sports suspension. I have been told by Audi to contact a national snow-chain specialist to see about fitting chains. It seems that wherever I go I am told they cannot be fitted. My current car, a B5 A4 SE has to use Centrax chains because of clearance issues with the steering arm behind the wheel. Steel wheels and snow tyres are not acceptable either for legal reasons. The part of France where I am going legally requires me to have chains. Surely someone must have sucessfully fitted chains to a B7 A4 with 17" Alloys?

Any helpful comments will be greatly appreciated.

Ant.

The reason they say you can't fit chains is because there is not enough clearance between the inside of the wheel and the suspension. You need to use chains which only cover the tread part of the tyre and not wrap right around the wheel to the inside. I have a B7 S4 and have these chains http://www.snowchains.co.uk/main/quattro.htm which work great. Once you have set them up once, they're very easy to put on. There is a video about half way down the page.
