A6 Auto Gearbox Noise

Hoping someone can help me identify a likely problem with my 1997 A6 2.6 Auto's gearbox please. It's started 'rattling' when in neutral or park, but that stops if I use the footbrake as well. There's no noise in any driving gear and it drives well. The rattling can be felt through the gearstick as well as heard. I was wondering if the gearbox is supposed to brake itself when in neutral/park but that a cog is worn - perhaps using footbrake applies an alternative mechanical stop to the gearbox?

If it goes away with your foot on the brake I think it will be a bit of wear in the shifter lock and the rattle being caused by slight vibrations from the engine up the cable.
