Hi

I'm thinking of upgrading my 2.4 non-turbo engine in my L reg camper to a turbo diesel unit for power and economic reasons.

Can anyone recommend where is the best place to start looking for the new engine (i'm based in Dorset) and whether it is possible to retain the current 5 speed gearbox?

Thanks for your help (in advance)

Robin

The best place to start is by buying one ready made, harsh advice I know but well intended. You would not believe how complex this job is.

Where is the best place to source the complete unit?

It isn't just the unit, there are electronics to consider. You need to find a complete vehicle to do this swap from; you would go mad running around trying to source all the bits. What year and engine code is your T4?

a 1993 and i think the code is Transporter 57DSWB ?? or do you need an engine number??

That would be ideal.

Looking through the options I can see you would be best to find a T4 with an ACV engine and these were used from 96 to 04 BUT the T4 was revised in 96 and the ACV was only used for a short period in the earlier version. The box on an AAB engine is an 02B series and on the ACV an 02G series so I can’t see your box working. If you did this you would have to find a complete donor vehicle with ECU, wiring, cooling, transmission-the lot.

alternatively there is a company that offers a turbo conversion for the 2.4 IDI.

I have no affiliation with this business, but it is likely to be cheaper than trying to convert your van to a 2.5 TDI. It will also be a lot less electronics.
