Currently my '98 A4 Tdi (AFN engine) does not have an engine (or gearbox)undershield. I thought I would try and get hold of a used one (scrapyard, ebay etc). Could anyone tell me if all the 'B5' cars have the same and so would fit, or do I have to get a specific one for the diesel engine, or even harder a specific one for that diesel engine in that year....... (And to further complicate, are the Passat ones the same?)
Thanks.

I`m looking for an undershield myself, for a 98 1.9tdi.

Can anybody tell me if it will reduce noise levels noticeably?

What is it`s main purpose...to protect the engine/bay from water, salt, etc?

Thanks,
Bard.

I have read somewhere that there are a few sensors near the bottom of the engine that are quite susceptible to weather damage as they are designed to be used with the under tray. If yours has gone missing over the years then it will be worth replacing.

I believe the main reasons fore it are to keep dirt (inc salt) and excessive water of the underside of the engine and for aerodynamics, this makes it a little quieter as there is less drag on the underside of the car also this = more down force!

I think the actual name is "sound deadener"
I priced it up a good while back at around £65 from dealer.
The bolts / fixings are expensive at around £2 each
