Hiya

I have a funny and annoying sound when driving my mk3 td. It comes from the center of the dash, I don't think it’s anything major in a mechanical sense though...It’s been happening for a couple of months now and is always there when my car is in motion. it sounds like a loose fan? Kind of warbling, it ticks even with the heater control fans are off. Hehe I know it adds more “character” to the car but it’s a tad tedious now.

I'd like to sort it out, have any of you had/have this problem and any suggestions would be great.

Joe

I have a 1993 1.9 td estate that has an annoying ticking from the center of the dash. Does your's get worse when the clutch is slightly depressed?

same said problem ,get upside down yes bum in the air, passenger seat as far back as it will go
pull back the carpet an have a look all your heater blower mechanism is on this side and may sound like it as coming from the center dash
process of elimination rubber squeak ,squeak noise
annoying isnt it even when the engine is at idle
no simple answer just tighten every bolt ,nut or connection you see may have to remove passenger lower glove box to get in there
gave all connections a move around as far as hand would reach
no more annoying sound

heh come on its an old girl enjoy!!!!!!!!

I've the same problem with my TD, it's been like that for over 2 years now! I got used to it but it would be nice to finally fix it. Gets worse if the clutch pedal is slightly depressed.

So is it simply something loose behind the dash? Anyone shine any more light on it? I did once hear that it could be the clutch thrust bearing or something?

This isn't the case with me, the noise is only apparant in driving conditions, or when the engine/clutch/gearbox is under load.

Apologies for hi-jacking your thread ,dubtastic,....but the noise Alun is getting sounds exactly like the one i'm getting.....sounds like those plastic things you used to attatch to the forks of your bike which would then hit the spokes and make it sound as if you had an engine?!?...Child of the 70's ...we were easily pleased back then....;)

Haven't a clue what it is.....Alun, you reckon it may be the Thrust bearing???

It's just what I got told once, I've no idea how true it is. If it was true though then surely mine would of broke by now?! I've done over 50,000 miles with the "noise" and it's never got any worse or any better. So it could still be anything.

Anyone shine any light?

Just been into TSR...local specialists...they reckon it's the CV joints...booked in in a couple of weeks 2do!!!

If it were the CV joints you'd only get the noise when turning or on full lock. Let us know if it solves the mystery noise though!

Got to agree with you there Alun....still its in on the 25th so I'll let you know then....BTW went to the $tealers to get a comparative quote on the CV joints being replaced....they were looking at about £350/side non inclusive....the indy was well under half that....beyond me why anyone uses the dealer network for anything apart from warranty work....

Into the local indy's....they've had a drive and have diagnosed the diffs in the gear-box being shot :zx11: Replacement gear box going in I'll let you know if thats the fix!!
