I have just got my first golf, its a 93 mk3 1.8cl, I love it. I am currently in the middle of fixing the boy racer exhaust. My problem is with the cat and downpipe. I bought a new cat from euro car parts but the flanges on the cat dont match the downpipe of the car. I am unsure if i have been given the wrong cat or there is a different downpipe on the car.
Also how do i tell what type of engine i have.

Any help would be great. thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum. Your car will have either an AAM or ABS engine which are 75PS or 90PS respectively. The white sticker on the cam belt cover will tell you which. The flange design of the new cat looks about right, in what way doesn’t it match? Have you got a part number and manufacturers name for the new cat?

Hi, thanks for the reply, the flange of the downpipe is exactly the same. I would have thought that the downpipe flange would have to fit into the cat flange. It is an AAM engine by the way.
the cat is made by react. the euro car parts number is 721445111

There is a sealing ring between the downpipe and the cat that spaces the two flanges apart.

brilliant, no one else could tell me that. The spacer must be included in the cat fitting kit that i didn't buy. thanks for the help

If the kit doesn’t include the seal, it is VW part number 357 253 137 and costs £2.88 from VW and is also easily available from any exhaust distributor with a typical manufacturer being Bosal and their part number is 256-049. The three bolts required are M8x45 and VW part number N 010 345 10 @ £0.73 each and the three nuts are N 022 146 4 @ £0.22 each and these are easily available as well. I like to add an M8 washer under the head of the bolts and under the nut but depending on the downpipe and cat you may need a 50-mm long bolt to do this.
