Hi,

I need to change the alternator and water pump belts on a mk III 1.9 non turbo diesel.

I can see how the alternator belt loosens but I cant figure out how to slacken the water pump v belt.

I,ve had a look underneat and slackened a 13mm bolt with a strange washer type thing behind it :) - this is right at the bottom of the engine near the water pump but I cant get anything to move.

Any help would be appreciated - many thanks

Mark

I thought that sounded odd last night but I have to admit to not being at my best at the moment, I have a serious case of Man Flu. The pump driven from the V belt is the power steering pump. The diagram should help, release bolt 1 and nut 2 and lever the alternator down, I use a crow bar. The power steering pump is released by undoing the bolts and moving the adjuster

Many thanks for this - I did manage to slacken the alternator and lever it down but I couldn't get any movement on the power steering pump when I loosened the bolt on the bottom - I'll give it another go - Thanks again

Hi,
I can get the alternator belt off ok ( well off the pulleys anyway - the bottom belt needs to come off to remove it completely ) , trouble is I can't figure out how many bolts to undo to get some movement on the water pump belt - I slackened a 13mm right at the bottom then a 16mm a little higher up nearer the front - still no movement.

:1zhelp:

:) thanks again

Sorry - I keep calling it a water pump belt - it's actually power steering :o

So how did you eventually take the alternator belt off?
I have the same problem - I can easily slacken the alternator belt, but I can't get the power steering belt to slacken off, so that I can get the alternator belt off completely and put a new one on.

Someone did the job for me - when I watched them they slackened the power steering belt from underneath just behind the drivers front wheel - they jacked the car up to get at it - there is a bolt there that needs to be undone - I think there is a panel that you may have to remove - sorry I cant be any more help.
