I have just bought 2 new front door handles from a VW dealer on ebay and when I fitted one it seems the locking mechanism is too short by about 1/2 cm. It doesn't catch the side lock from the handle.

They are supposed to be for a MK1 so I don't know why they don't fit.:zx11:

Can anyone suggest anything other than sending them back?

Do you have a part number for the two handles and what year is your Golf 1?

I will have to double check but I got that excited and think I have chucked the boxes - sad person I am!!

I have checked ebay again and it does state for MK1 convertibles 81 - 92.

I have a 1987 MK1 Cabrio GTI.

just wondered if anyone else had this problem before I send them back?

The part number should be 155 837 205 A (left) and 155 837 206 A (right) and they fit the Cabrio from 79 to 93 plus 77>80 Golf 1, 79>80 Jetta 1 and 74>80 Passat. If these are the numbers you have, the problem lies with the door catch unit and not with the handle. Does the car have Armor Door Plates around the handles?

there is a number on the driver one (LH):
15434 624 GERMANY

I don't have the armor plates yet but will get them shortly.

I have contacted the seller and waiting for an answer.

15434 is a Febi number, not a VW number so that is not a genuine door handle and it is a pattern item for a Golf 1 tin top from 1982 and for a Golf 2. An original VW Cabrio handle costs £41.11, a Febi one costs about a quarter of that if not less. Febi say that handle will work on a Cabrio, I stock them and I know they won't work without swapping over the operating V shaped driver on the back.

thanks for your help Crasher :biglaugh:

I have examined the handle and will try and swap the V over - hopefully I won't **** it up!

you are right though, I only paid 14.99 for two handles with the barrels and keys, so I guess I should't complain. As I am new to all of this I didn't know they would be real expensive for genuine ones, though this guy said they were VW!

thanks again

FleaBay if full of liars, thieves, cheats, scum and all manner of pond life. At some point the government is going to crack down on it, especially when they work out how much tax they are losing.
