VW T4 2.4d 1996 Ignition problem any advice?

Hi,
My 1996 2.4d has an occasional problem with the ignition, when the key is turned all correct lights show on the dash. Then when the key is turned to crank the engine, occasionally instead of the engine turning there is either a crunching noise or just a free whizzing noise from the engine bay and the engine does not turn over.

This only happens occasionally most times it will start noramlly. My first thoughts have been that the starter motor is on the blink?

If anyone knows any more to confirm this or has any other suggestions it would be great to hear them?

It sounds as if the solenoid that throws the starter in is on it's way out.

You will need to replace it in due course. How long you wait depends on how annoying you will find it to be left sitting in a vehicle that won't start at the most inopportune moment.
