Hi Guys..Firstly a great site you have.. I am a active poster on a BMW site.. And am a BMW man but do like Audis..

I have just bought a 96 Model Audi Coupe a few questions if I may please...

The rev counter illumination is not on I am presuming it is a Bulb.. Is it easy to take he dash board out to replace the bulb..?

Also where there are three dials on the centre console with battery voltage. oil bar pressure and another one I cant remember.. on two dials there is no light when the lights are switched on.. I am presuming its the bulbs.. How do I remove these three dials to replace the bulbs.. ?

Also when the car is started it takes about a minuite for the airbag light to go out is this normal ?

The temperature gauge does not move what could that be... ?

When I got the Audi the engine sounded a little tappety. the previous owner didn't use it much and I took it for a good run and the tappety noise dissapeared which was good..

One more thing please.. with reference to the oil bar pressure where should the needle sit... ?

Welcome to Audi ownership...

To get the instruments out, the steering column trim has to be removed. (screws from underneath). Then the instrument panel securing screws can be seen at the bottom. Undo these and pull the bottom out first, then flip the top forwards when they are halfway out. bulbs should be visible on the back of the circuit board, 1.2 watts I think. If you have not got enough room to do this, the steering wheel will have to come off, this makes it easier, but complicates things you having an airbag wheel. I'm not sure but guess disconnecting the battery would disable the airbag?
I'm not sure if the B4 coupe is different, but on earlier coupes, the aux gauges are accessible if you remove the heater control knobs (pull off with pliers - lined with cardboard) remove the heater fascia/trim panel. The aux gauge securing screws shoud be exposed at the bottom of the heater control panel.
Temp gauge is probably the sender, 16v and V6 use a multi function temp sender which is fairly expensive from the dealer so I'd shop around Vag parts, GSF, Eurocarparts etc for this. 2.0 8v I'm not sure but think it is a cheaper 1 function type. Which model do you have?
Airbag light delay I don't know, there is the controller for it which could be faulty.

Re the temp sender (Your engine should be ABK code) Also buy a new O ring seal which you will probably need:

The oil pressure should be above 0.25 bar at idle and above 1.8 bar at 2500?rpm. These are the limits for bringing the oil pressure warning on. In practice, 1.5bar at idle and 4-5 bar above 2500rpm are more normal. Depending on oil viscosity used and temperature.
The hydraulic tappets can be noisy, especially as the car warms up in my experience. You might reduce this by running fully synthetic oil, but it never seems to go away completely. Cheapest replacements I've seen are from Custom Autocraft:

or Euro carparts have them for £6.50. To replace them the camshaft has to be removed.

Scotty33 thanks for your guidance... I changed the Instrument cluster bulbs, a little fiddly but managed it..
Will attempt the three dial ones tomorrow

I have a couple of cluster bulbs to do myself.

One is the battery light, It's worth mentioning that it is part of the exciter circuit and the alternator does not start charging until 2800 rpm has been exceeded. If the bulb is blown or a led has been fitted it seems like there is an alternator problem. I nearly changed mine due to this!

I just can't see a way how the three dials on the centre come out.. The Audi dealer wasn't much help....

If you remove the heater control knobs, grip them with pliers (jaws lined with card to prevent damage). They should come off with a straight yank.
This exposes screws which secure the trim panel/fascia around the heater controls, remove these and the trim comes away.
Exposes 2 screws at the bottom, just above the auxilliary gauges. Undo these and the trim panel comes off the gauges. (I have not been any further than this, my problem was with the heater controls). I thought this also unfastened the gauges mounting plate? If not, there are 'tabs' at both sides of the gauge mounting plate, I thought maybe they slide into a guide? or they may be screwed also?

I will try again tomorrow I got far as taking the heater knobs of which exposed the screws for the trim panel.. From there I couldn't see any screws, from what I can see I think the gauges are secured by a screw which un screws from the rear, I think I will have to take the centre console apart to get this screw..

I have googled a search but nothing came up..

Scotty I managed to change the middle auxillary bulb for the gauges... I noticed there was a small piece of trim near the front console I took this off and there was a nut once undone I tried to figure out how the handbrake console should become undone.. I took the rear ashtray off and there was another nut, once undone the console lifted and the centre gauges were able to come out slightly...

It was a bit fiddly as there is not much room but I managed it in the end.... Thanks again for your assistance...

I did manage to loose two bulbs in the process as they fell behind the gauge unit, so instead of trying to retrieve them I went and got two new ones...
