They work by pumping more fuel into your engine. I do believe they are adjustable but the adjustment system is basic. i.e turn up until you start smoking!.

20-30hp gain is no big deal for tdi engine as its well underfuelled out of the factory to keep emissions down.

I couldnt vouch for the long term effect on the engine as I've gone down a different tuning route.

BHP for £ they have to be good value. Just remember they are a "one size fits all" solution.

If its a tried and tested map your mate puts into your ECU its a better solution. Maps are commercially available, hence the massive growth of tuning companies who can come to your door armed with a lap top and carry out a re-map. Be warned, like every other business there is good and bad. There are also some good tuners out there who develop their own maps.

The more extreme the map, the more potential for problems. Make sure you have a copy of the original map. VW spent millions developing it!

My only other point for you to bear in mind is that this an extremely specialised skill and not for a "dabbler". I'm prepared to travel 500+ miles round trip to my mapper. I wouldnt let anyone else near my engine. Having said that if my engine was in standard trim I would not be quite so fussy.

I personally would also fit a boost gauge (easy) so you can see whats going on with your tuned engine.

Best of luck.
