There is only a relay on cars that had the recall and this is usually behind the switch but as it was a retro fit, it can be all over the place. The most common failure is the switch itself. Is everything else on the car working such as wipers and heater blower?

If the other consumers are working OK then it won't be the X relay so they may mean the dim dip relay but that should not affect the main lights, only dim dip with side lights and ignition. Unfortunately I have to go now until Boxing Day and you won't get any parts now so I can't see you getting it working as it will probably be the headlight switch any way.

The switch is part number 1H6 941 532 F which is specific to a GB model car and they cost £70.79 from a VW dealer.

It wouldn't harm, just check the switch is the same number and if not, run the number by me so I can check it is compatible. Are you running standard headlight bulbs?

yes the car is a standard gl model with normal lights can you recommend a second hand spares supplier?

cheers again

Hi Rumples
Just noticed your posts of late last year. I've got the same problem (perhaps directly connected with something more unpleasant - a burning smell and smoke from the steering column electrics). Did you manage to find out the cause? Would be very grateful to know

Best Wishes

Just found out today that my dipped headlight failure appears likely to have been down to a faulty full-beam armature switch. This assembly includes the hazard button and indicators. It had started to burn up, nothing too dramatic but worrying :spent toy-gun caps smell and occasional wispy smoke from top-left steering column. Funny thing is everything else on the arm still worked perfectly and no signs of burning to anywhere on the arm when taken off and examined! Picked up another at a breakers for 12 GBP. Now have dipped headlights again!

The armature couples with the wiper stalk assembly but the two are separate. If investigating, don't forget to disconnect battery before working on the electrics. If you've an airbag, this is considered vital. Don't reconnect the batt until you've reconnected and replaced everything, including the airbag. Steering wheel nut torque is 36lbs 50nm
