Hi everyone, new to the forums.
I have a VW Polo 2000 - 2002 shape(Petrol) and I have been told that the timing belt needs to be changed every 4 years/60,000 miles whichever comes first.
I have phoned a couple of VW dealers and they have all confirmed this.
I think that this is a bit excessive to be honest.
I thought the timing belt needed to be replaced at approx 80,000 miles !
Is this just another way of fleecing the customer or are VW being extra cautious.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I belive even 60,000 miles is way too long for a timing belt.... I can remeber the days when they were changed between 30,000 and 36,000.

I know that with modern technology and materials things can last longer, but concider what will happen if the belt breaks... £300 or so to change a belt, or anything upto £2000 or more to repair the damage;)

I can confirm that this does sound the correct interval to change the belt.

Thanks for your reply Stuart. The timing belt has just been replaced today. I will make sure that I have it replaced at the correct intervals, because as you said, the cost of having it replaced, is negligible to the cost of having to replace the engine !
