I'm still battling with the dealer (independant) who sold me my heap of cr*p A6 2.5 TDi, but in the mean-time I'm trying to price up a replacement engine for it in case worst case scenario occurs. Which knowing my luck it probably will! How do I find exactly what 'code' my engine is? ie AFB AFK or whatever? Is that in the VIN number or on the engine itself?

Many thanks and Happy Christmas!

It is an AFB.

What is the difference between AFB and AYM? I presume I couldn't use an AYM instead?!

An AYM is quite different and only directly compatible with the AKE and BFC. An AYM isn't directly compatible with anything else.

Shame......only AFB I can find has 81K on it....AYM I found has 40K!

Rob, do not take for granted what breakers say as they're often misleading with regards of the mileage....rule of thumb, min. 10 k for each year of ownership, otherwise it does not pays to drive a diesel ! These cars are verry easy to clock and a simple interface dongle and tachopro, from fleabay ussually does them all up to 2005. Take someone that knows these engines- a.ka good diesel specialist/mechanic- when going to look for a replacement engine. Take the rocker covers off and look at the cams on boths sides, because some were fitted with ''soft cams lobes'' and thats why they ended up in scrap yards.
