hi, purchased a T4 Special on a 2000 plate back in the summer. Found that it took a while to 'warm-up' maybe after 5-10 miles she'd be fine running like i'd expext. But recently this has deteriorated big style!! Struggles to move at low revs, and never seems to actually warm-up! Once im on a motorway - carriageway hittin 40- 50 + she goes like a dream, but once i slow down, i.e junctions etc the power drops right off ! Very annoying - is it the turbo??

Your Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve may be stuck open. Both the 1.9TD and the 2.5TDi have these valves fitted.

There is a how to on EGR cleaning "REMOVED"

Hi,
I have the same problem with my 2000 ltd edition T4. Did you manage to get it fixed if so how?
Many thanks

Hi. I was having exactly the same problems of power loss with my 1.9TD transporter, very sluggish at start-up (particulary on cold mornings) and low speeds even when driving at running temperature on the open road. I started last week by adjusting the throttle cable which produced instant results and have now also removed and cleaned both the EGR valve and inlet manifold which were both around 50% filled with crud! This has improved things further and it's now almost like having a completely different van as I'm getting around 10-15mph higher maximum speed, even on hills, and fuel consumption has improved by around 5mpg!

FYI
Took mine to the garage last week, they carried out a diagnostics test on it and instantly found that it was a faulty switch on the throttle. (apparently this governs how much throttle the engine needs) at VW the spare part was £38. (plus £30 to fit) once this was changed out the van drove like a dream - and i am thrilled!
This switch is located to the left of the break fluid pot, and the switch has a cable which if you follow goes down and runs alongside the throttle cable where its connected to 'something ot other'
So this is what cured my problem !
Hope this helps
