VW GOLF 1.8 AUTO 94 reg CAN'T GET IT OUT OF PARK?

Hi all, my mum couldn't get the car out of park last nite although this morning when I tried it, it came out, but only if I pushed really hard on the brake pedal? I know that you have to put your foot on the brake and push the release button in the side of the gearstick to normally do this but this time I had to push extremely hard on the pedal? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like the brake switch needs adjustment
