Generally on any car - a high biting point is the sign of a worn / wearing clutch.

if its not slipping - its up to you if you change it now, or wait until it slips or lets go.

put the hand brake on, engage 1st gear & slowly release the clutch. If it doesnt stall - its slipping imo

That will only make things worse IMO...

High biting point is quite common in vw's.... if your not noticing any lack in performance or clutch slipping it's fine....

Thats my 2p's worth :D

I only said that to check if the clutch is slipping or not.. if the clutch cant take that - its not worth having !

Agree that high bite point on VW are common, but yes, the pedal gets higher as the clutch wears (apart from newer SAC clutches common on Ford, BMW where it stays the same). Drove a brand new fox for the first time t'other day and the bite point was very very high.

wouldnt bother with an uprated clutch. The original audi clutches are very good and unless you are running nitrous  its not needed.

i got my clutch for £100 (original audi clutch) and my brother in law fiited it for £50. its a good few hours+ for labour costs in a garage.

Anything fiited in a garage under £250+ you will have done very well!!

They have a reputation for under quoting to get you in the door.... then load with extras after, such as flywheel skims which frankly are rarely needed. Allegedly. They also normally fit their own non oe low quality brand of clutch. This being said, i have found 1 or 2 decent outlets.... but thats nationwide!

Valeo will supply an oe clutch, but wont be able to supply the flywheel. LuK are oe on most VAG, and make most VAG flywheels. Sachs make a few flywheels and clutch fitted to em.
In the aftermarket, LuK and Valeo will likely have the same product in the boxes, Sachs should be but not 100%. Dont fit anything else as quality will be inconsistant bud, unless you get whichever supplier to physically check in the box for new (not remanufactured), and a luk, sachs or valeo unit! Definately dont go for mr clutch's own brad clutch - can go under different names ive found, but commonly ebc.

That comment is rubbish from vw online. There is no difference in quality from pre 2000 flywheels to later. If anything, the later ones will be better as technology improves.... and they all come out of the same factory!
Also, there is no possible way of knowing if the flywheel needs changing before you get the gearbox off and test it! If its worn, it needs changing, if its within tolerance, it doesnt really. Still, on 80k, with a worn clutch, the flywheel cant be perfect. If youre keeping the car, you may as well change it to be honest. Otherwise if it does go, you then need another clutch, and another lot of labour....
LuK part number for aeb is 415 0030 10. Clutch is 623 3097 00 (has also been 623 1946 00 and 623 3104 00, but both been superseded) Book time 4.15 hours.

Are you looking for just the clutch, or the whole clutch change job doing?
Let me know with area youre in and I should be able to recommend someone no worries.

hi guys .. good posts.

i wasnt aware that a high biting point indicates that the clutch is going. I know mine has been for over a year now as i get a weird high pitched noise when i press the clutch but my mechanic thinks it will be ok until i next service the car (in 3 months).

Do any of you have any recommendations on where to buy a clutch from? i thought about GSF (German Swedish French) or a local parts place. Is there a particular one to get?

A high pitched squeal like you say is normally the release bearing..... and if its making a noise like that, Its not going to last much longer at all.
Putting off the job could cost you more in the long term.
Why wait until the service though bud? Its not like they'll be doing any f the work in the service towards changing the clutch?
GSF are LuK distributors, which is about the best you can get. Otherwise all Valeo and most Sachs are origianl equipment. Steer clear of any other brands IMO - you may get an OE clutch, you may not, and you get what you pay for.
However - it may be better for the garage you get to do the work, to get the clutch? They'll be happier, they wont load the labour rate as much as if you provide the clutch, and much better situation should there be a later warranty issue. Consider that a garage should get a much better price for the clutch in the first place too!!

Hi mate

im starting to agree with you on this one. I ought to really get the clutch changed pretty soon. just had some work done over the weekend so am waiting for pay day ... probably will carry it out in early November and also get the front drop links changed as well.

The noise only can be heard from inside and aint that loud but better to get it done now than making it into a bigger one!

I will have to have a word with my mechanic .. hes ok with me getting the parts. labour is not too bad but the clutch will take a few hours
