Argh! Help, please someone.

I've just bought my first car (Golf 1.6 16v SE, 2002. 19K miles) after saving up for 2yrs and it's all gone a bit pear-shaped. I think most of the problem is due to the fact that I've never owned a car before and so I'm not really sure how fussy I should be and quite what my rights are.

Background - bought a 2002 Golf from a dealership 1 month ago.

Since - First of all, the gears became very sticky and it was really hard to get it into 1st, 2nd and reverse (3rd, 4th and 5th were perfect) after about 2 weeks. I took it back to the dealership as they have a 90 day warranty. They said they would fix it. 1 week later (after going to a specialist and having it reconditioned) I got it back. Still no good with the gears and possibly a little worse.

I took it back again and this time with a new problem of the engine squealing intermittantly (i.e. 1 sec on, 1 sec off) when in gear, but without the accelerator depressed) and asked them to sort out the still bad gears. They said they couldn't hear the squealing but would sort out the gear linkages.

1 week later again - gears a lot better (but by no means perfect) but now 3rd and 4th aren't perfect anymore. It's also now become quite hard to find reverse. Yesterday, the engine has now started to make a rather loud "ticking" noise about a foot above the alternator in the engine.

What do I do??!!

Do I just accept the problems and take it to a garage and get it fixed?
Do I get fussy with the dealership and demand that they fix the car so I'm happy?
Do I ask for my money back as the car's going dodgy all the time?
What do I do if the dealership says the car is fine and refuse to do any more to it?

Any help/advice, much appreciated :1zhelp:

I'd keep on hounding them until they give you the car you thought you were buying.

Make it known you're not happy and that you may be looking to bring the car back to them for a full refund.

Keep notes on what is wrong, what's been done, what hasn't been done etc. It may be worth calling VWUK just to let them know what's happening.

Good luck, keep at it and welcome

Ok thanks - I'll give them a stern call this afternoon and see what happens....
