toledo mk1/ golf mk2 engine swap?

ive just got a mk1 1.8 8v and not sure where to begin, i dont want to spends loads of cash to get more power out of it so an engine swaps prob the best bet. i know its a mk2 golf base, but dont know whitch engine would be best really, i was looking at a 2.0 16v. are there bigger engines that will fit? cheers:biglaugh:

The Toledo 1 is more of a Golf 3 than a Golf 2 so you could do a VR6 or even a Golf 4 1.8T transplant. I would not recommend the 2L 16V ABF engine, it isn’t one of my favourites. Whatever conversion you do will involve changing the fuel pump as the 1.8 90PS engine has a very low pressure fuel pump.
