I'm investigating the feasibility of doing a timing belt change on my 2000 Lupo 1.7 SDI. Can anyone point me to any details and any special tools I may need? Can it be done with the engine in situ? what needs to be removed as a minimum? Approximate time for the job.

Thanks:beerchug:

I just had this done for £240 including the water pump, anti freeze & labour & we did the large drive belt at the same time. It took 2.5 hours including going to the local Motor Parts Direct shop to get an unplanned for main drive belt which was cracking.

The Gates PowerGrip Cam belt kit is on Ebay at £45 delivered.
The water pump is on Ebay at around £31 delivered.
The main drive belt was £13.42 trade from a local Motor Parts Direct shop.
You might as well replace the anti freeze whilst this work is being done.

I used a mobile mechanic who was fully kitted out for the job and did the work in my garage at home.

Please note that the water pumps on these tend to leak and the belts will crack with age.
It's a no brainer to do the pump & main belt whilst the cam belt is being done.
The water pump was very difficult to remove and was stuck on with age.
The engine mount had to be removed to do this job.
The car engine was then raised on a large mechnics jack to get the room necessary to do the work.
I could never have done this job myself due to the tools required.
You also need some transport to get any unexpected bits whilst the car is being worked on so the local supplier shop needs to be open!
