cold idle

Hi I have recently bought a polo 1.4cl. When it is started warm/cold it chugs away for 20/30 secs and i have to rev it to keep it from cutting out, there is also a strong fuel smell. after this it is great and could drive anywhere. When i got in tonight, i got out the car and it almost cut out, stuttering for a few secs then idling fine again. Sometimes It needs to be cranked for ages before it starts then it's the same as above, rev it through the lumpiness then it's fine. I've done 1000 miles in 2 weeks and it's a great car, feels like it's 42000 miles, any idea what this might be?
