Golf 1.6 16v W reg

Firstly a big hello, as I'm very new here!

I have a golf 1.6 ((16v W reg) as a second car and the engine warning light keeps ocming on and off. Is there a straight forward way of reading the fault codes (as I'm able to on my BMW via the diagnostic plug, a paperclip and a print out of the corresponding codes via the dash board lights).

I'd be really grateful for any advice that any of you may have.

I had this happen on my 2001 1.6L Golf. Saw the light come on 2 days after buying it from a used car yard! (And felt really sick in the stomach!) Checked it out with VAG-COM and found it was something to do with the MAF.

However, I finally got it fixed yesterday (thankfully covered by the used car warranty) and they replaced the lambda sensor ...

In any case you'll need to read the diagnostic codes first. I couldn't find any way of doing this without a tool, but i got a cheap cable off ebay and downloaded the free version of vag-com...
