Newbie alert!

Can you tell from engine numbers etc what bhp the engine is (90, 110, 130)? 'TDI' badge colour seems a bit open to 'modification'.

Am thinking older 1.9tdi estate, not brand new shape.

Thanks

If you look in the spare wheel well, there should be a sticker with the car data. There is the power in kw and the engine/g'box/paint codes...AHH/AHU 66kw= 90 Bhp ,AFN/AVG 81 Kw=110 Bhp, these are older engines with VE Bosch rotary pumps. The newer ones, so called PD (Pumpe deuse) are: AJM/ATJ 85kw=115 Bhp(early ones mainly fitted to 1998 on passats and a4 from 2000) , AVB/ATD 74kw=100Bhp , AVF/AWX 96kw =130 Bhp.

As he said...

The way I usually put it is if it's a 90 or a 110hp, it's an injection pump 'traditional' tdi.

If it's anything else, it's a PD.

You can't just go by age as VW started using the PD a few years before the old VE tdi was phased out.

On the mk1 octavia, apart from the very last 2004 ones the general rule was the base models were sdi or 90 tdi, the better models (slx/elegance/l&K) were the 110tdi. PD engines were only introduced just before the mk2 came out.

For my money, an Elegance with it's standard 110tdi is a good motor in lots of ways. There is NO advantage to the 90bhp in any way.
