Hi,

I have a 98 Golf 1.9 Diesel N/A. It is leaking some oil from the back of the gearbox. I am going to have a look at this problem when I service the car at the week end. I am also going to change the gearbox oil.

Unfortunately the handbook does not specify what grade of gearbox oil to use. I went to my local Halfords store who recommended I use Castrol TAF-X. But they then told me they don't have any.

I bought standard part synthetic 75W-90 manual oil. Does anyone know if this is good enough for my gearbox. Appearently standard multi-grade oil could be used for the gearboxes from this engine before 1996. What is the difference (if any?)

Also any help on the source of the gaerbox oil leak would be greatly appreciated as the oil has dripped on to the driveshaft and is splashed everywhere now, meaning the culprit is well hidden.

What a weekend I have in store for me!!! Any help would be great.
