Wanting to change my 6CD changer for one of these VDO beasts that Audi use as it has an MP3 facility.

But, looking on line for a supplier, they state that it is not suitable for B5 Passats.

Why?

Oh - I've never seen one of those. Never made it to the UK I guess. I wonder why???

(Reading it in my very poor german, I think it's a single play unit, not a multi-disc changer)

Single's okay for me, as it has an SD slot for MP3's :D

But, why can't it be used in a Passat B5?

Its okay for Golf IV etc....

I've no idea, the Gamma head units are identical to the best of my knowledge, as are the double din slot in the dash. Try dropping them an email, to see if they can explain why?

Cheers Froggy,

Been researching this some more.

Apparently the device won't work in CAN-BUS equipped cars (which I believe the B5 and B5.5 cars are) so, its probably a no go. :(

I've sent the company a message so I will see if they bother to answer me....

Right, just received a message back - they say its okay...

Damn it I'm gonna buy myself one for Xmas

Seen them listed on ebay, there is only one Gamma radio so if you have one fitted then the VDO unit works and is a replacement for the standard single or 6 disc in dash units.

Can-Bus is used in the B6 not B5.x. and the MKIV golf uses the same system as the B5.x

Hi Rampage,

I have been in contact with www.navi-24.de (http://www.navi-24.de) who confirm your remarks.

They offer the part with 2 year guarantee so I am going to order one asap :D

I'm not worried about losing the 6 CD changer as the VDO unit will play MP3 CD's and it has the SD card slot.

In fact I think I could sell the 6CD changer for what the VDO part will cost...

Technisat who make the head units for the VW group, do an updated CD head unit for Skoda which does MP3 - The Symphony MP3, that would give you 7 x CD + MP3 :D and acording to posts I have read is better sounding than the Gamma.

Sweet bit of kit that!:D

One drawback in a Passat tho - it's got green illumination!!!

Problem is it's 1 & 1/2 din size, not standard. It will fit but only with a lot of messing about....

And Technisat are not the only producer of the Gamma unit. They are actually sourced from Blaupunkt, VDO, Sony, Technisat, and very rare but I've seen one, Clarion. You can't tell the difference from the front.
