hi all cool site.

heres my problem

I purchased a L reg mk3 golf td as a work runner the performance was nowhere to be seen ( rough idle and a max speed of 80mph )

i put this down to the fact that when i got the car the injector pump was hanging of its mounting,

i reset timing etc but it was still the same. so i removed the head had the valves checked( non were bent) had the recut and a de-coke.

it was at this point whilst purchasing parts i have found the the block and head are from a tdi ( engine code 1z ) rather than the aaz it should have fitted.

now from what im aware is that the 1z engine has a lower compresion ratio ( 19 -1 ) and a higher fuel pressure for the injectors and the aaz had a higher compression ratio 23 - 1 and a lower fuel pressure. this leaves me with a problem tht i now have a lower pressure injector pump and a lower compression engine which all adds up to poor power.

so what to do ??

can i make a tdi injector pump work correctly without an ecu etc???
should i buy a larger turbo ?? ( presently has a k14 )
also whilst the head is off should a flow the ports ?? ( yes i know how to do this :o )

any help ideas greatly appreciated

Sounds like you've got a mixed up engine there! I've got a Golf TD (AAZ, 75bhp). I don't know much about it but it'll do 110mph (no more because it's red-lining!), but I have noticed that it has the Audi badge on the engine block. I've come to learn that the engines were fitted to the audi 80s etc. I got quoted £750 for an enlarged turbo from a diesel specialist, so that's a bit expensive.

I do know however, that the fuel pump on mine is powered by engine. I mean the cambelt goes around e pulley which is directly connected to fuel pump.

hi
my pump too is powered from the cam belt i have done some more digging and found ways of getting more power from the engine as in some bigger nozzles from the 110bhp tdi the turbo from the same and whilst my cyl head is off im going to clean and flow the exhaust ports as these are quite small, i found ways of modding the pump to increase the fuel presure but ill do that last after ive rebuilt the engine a ran it again to see the difference.
