The PCD is Pitch Circle Diameter (5x112) the bolt spacing, you mean ET (Einpress Tiefe) which is the dish of the wheel. What Golf 5 is this?

I really can’t recommend a 20” inch wheel on a Golf 5. The standard wheel on your car will be a 6x15 with a 195/65 15 tyre so has a rolling radius of approx 317-mm. An 8.5 x 19 (ET55) wheel is the largest recommend TÜV sizing with a 225/35 19 tyre so maintaining an approx 320-mm rolling radius. To run a 20” wheel you would need a 225/30 20 tyre to keep the rolling radius within limits and I don’ think those are available whereas a 225/35 20 is available but is way too tall at 335-mm. A 235/30 20 is available but is getting to the point of rubbing and is too tall with an RR of 325-mm, in my opinion anyway.

:( bang goes the idea of 20's. they sound like too much effort. i think 19's i can settle with!!

Just watch the offset.
I had to remove 19s from my golf as the ET of 35 was to small and had touching all round. Have now fitted 18s with a 42 ET and they are okay.
IMO the 19s made the car look to tonka toyish.

I got them pretty cheap as I previously bought a set of wheels from the supplier for my Audi S4.
You can get this style wheel on ebay for around 500-580 plus delivery for wheels with VERY budget tyres. I didn't fancy budget tyres so paid a little more for decent stuff.
If you are interested PM me and I'll forward the guys e-mail (let him know I gave you his email and I'm sure he'll undercut any price you find on fleebay)

Talking of putting 18's on a TDI (mines a 2.0) what is the best width or 'j', was looking at 18's with width of 8 (8J) but have been told by a mate that handling will be bad compared to the standard 16" alloys already on, ps the alloys i'm looking at are R32 replicas ??

Looking to get tomorrow for £499 so help would be great ??

Cheers

Correct, handling will be slightly worse but not so the average punter would notice. Unless you are looking for seconds in track work, the change to bigger wheels would hardly be noticable in daily use of car on road - maybe a little harder ride.

Thanks for that,

Or should i play safe and go for the 17's with 7.5J, but saying that the VW 18's are 7.5, so does that 1/2 inch really make a difference ??

If you play it safe and buy 17s, a month later you'll wish you had 18s as the Golf is a chunky car and as such suits bigger wheels.
Go down you local VW dealer, I'm sure he'll have a few Golf models with different wheels sizes. Pretend your considering buying and test drive them - I honestly don't think you'll be able to detect an inch increase in wheel diameter.

What ever you decide - post pics once you get your new wheels.
