Hi,
I own a P reg Mk3 2.0 Golf Gti that has been causing me no end of trouble and any help would be greatly appreciated. I have an intermittent fault that can leave me stranded unable to restart the car. It normal starts from cold no problem but then, sometimes after 1 mile, sometimes after 40 miles the engine will cut out. I could be going at 70mph or whatever and it just dies! It also happens when stationary in traffic the engine will just cut out. The car sometimes restarts fine straight away but othertimes it turns over but won't catch. This can leave me stranded for hours until it randomly starts. Leaving me pushing the car to the hard shoulder or sat red-faced and unpopular. :zx11: I have had it linked up to diagnostic machines but it has not come back with any faults. It can also happen when I have turned the engine off after a journey. When I try and restart it will just turn and turn but won't catch. I have already worned out one starter motor because of this! Please help!
Alan

got the exact same problem with my mk3 golf gti. Stalling and not starting. It has beenwith my mechanic for the past 5 months and my mechanic is still scratching his head. Had a new coil and distributor fitted but no good. Had the after market alarm and immobiliser removed but again no good. He tells me that it is not the fuel pump as there is fuel going to the engine. Has the fuel supply relay sorted your mk3 out. My mechanic thinks it maybe the ecu now.

Hi, could well be the engine management relay, which cracks inside then cuts out when hot, cools down, works again, no fault codes because it kills the power supply to the engine computer! In relay plate above fuse box white number 30 stamped on the top. Regards, Phil

Also known distributor hall sender to give out too weak a signal such that there is still a signal but the square wave sig is too small to fire the ECU.

Immobiliser??

If you have an immobiliser and chip built into the key these can sometimes cause bother. Think VW can check the unit for fault codes. If you have a spare key try that and see if it makes any difference. (Thats presuming there is no aftermarket alarm/immobiliser fitted)

One of the spare keys I got cut for my Mk3 Diesel doesnt start the car sometimes because it is a bad copy. It can cause intermittent problems.

Worth a try.

Hi,
Just started to have the same problem with 1994 Driver.:zx11: Dist cap/rotor and coil changed with no change. Advised to get new Fuel relay 167 as when mine was checked it was red hot. When its cools down car drives fine.
Getting the relay tomorrow and will give feedback in the next 24hrs (fingers crossed)

I had a very similar problem, no fault codes found, so based on that I thought the only part of the ignition system not read was the coil.
I changed the coil £60 from Europarts and now every thing has been fine.
hope this helps.

Hi All,

Update on the fitting of 167 Relay VW Part No..191906383C. All seems well :biglaugh: and the car seems back to full power.
I had been advised that if the relay did not do the job that a very strong possible culprit could have been the Hall Sender Unit inside the distributor.
Good luck to all who are unlucky enough to get this problem and now its time for:beerchug:
