occurs in which gears, under acceleration or decellaration?

Occurs in all gears, out of gear, coasting and under acceleration.

The noise only occurs whilst in motion, the noise does not change pitch when the rev's are increased.

does noise change pitch when turning corners? have you checked g/box oil? drain small amount of oil from box after long run, check for metal filings..

Goes away when clutch pedal pressed in?

Noise is constant whether clutch is pressed or not. Pitch does not change when turning corners.

Manual, six speed transimssion

Have recently had car serviced starting to worry that oil levels may be to blame?

Hi
Old thread I know, but did you ever sort the whining problem?. I cannot find a thread anywhere relating to this fault that comes to a conclusion. We have a Passat 6 speed with 301,000 miles that has started to do this.
