service needed ?

I started her up today (the car that is) to be greeted by
a loud beep and "Service" appeared on the dash.

I guess this means it needs a service!

Do I need to take it to the a VW dealer to get them to
stop it reminding me every time?

A look through paperwork shows last service at a VW dealer
about 20000 miles ago. So I guess I need to ask dealer how much
for a 20000 mile service. Any ideas what i should expect to pay?

Also what am I likely to get for the service, e.g. do they just check
her over and then I have to pay extra if anything needs doing
or does the 20000 service include a standard list of things like oil/filter change etc ?

The dealers are doing a deal on older VW servicing. You dont say what yours is!
you say it was serviced 20,000 miles ago, but what was carried out? was it a full service, if so you could probably get away with a lubrication service which i think is just an oil change. if it is a diesel i wouldnt go for the long life service. I think you can put out the service check on your computer by yourself, but you will have to do a search on this site, on how to do it!

Just tell them that you want the service and to let you know about anything else.
they will probably give you a whole list of things that need doing. (a way of drumming up business.
